The holiday season has slowed things down, but the cold weather has ramped up. Emergency weather protocols have been in effect since Friday, Dec. 24 which has activated temporary emergency shelters throughout Victoria.
But even emergency shelters have their barriers.
Capital Daily spoke to Alex, a recently unhoused individual who can’t access these shelters because he’s got a lot of things with him, and a dog, Leeloo. Sector-wide staffing shortages at shelters, meanwhile, have presented their own problems: service providers such as Cool Aid and Our Place Society said their staffing shortages are impacting cold-weather protocols.
In response, activists and community groups are filling in gaps where government shelters fall short. Initiatives such as CASA are taking it upon themselves to help the unhoused through fundraising for shelters.
